J.R. was raised in rural north east Ohio where the rolling meadows and woods, cultivated fields, and industrialized urban areas have influenced his understanding and appreciation of the natural and built environments. After leaving Ohio in 1992, he served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Charleston, SC where he fell in love with the gardens of the Lowcountry and realized his calling to Landscape Architecture. After completing a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia, J.R. moved back to Charleston. His professional background includes working for a small design firm focused on sustainable design for high end residential projects, public and private projects at a multi-discipline Engineering/ Landscape Architecture firm, and as a project manager for a local Landscape Architecture firm. He gained invaluable experience while working in such diverse environments, including site planning, master planning, native planting design, construction documents, and construction observation on a wide range of projects. Along with his wife and partner, J.R. founded REMARK in fall of 2007 as a Landscape Architectural Studio focused on sustainable design by collaborating closely with clients, architects, engineers, and contractors to achieve successful design solutions for their projects. Kaleigh grew up along the beaches, creeks, marshes, and swamps of Jacksonville Florida, solidifying her love for the outdoors at an early age. After teaching natural science to children in the Maine wilderness, interning at a design firm in Western Australia, and installing landscapes in the Florida heat she graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. Kaleigh began her professional career at a multi-disciplinary firm in Orlando, Florida where she cut her teeth on a wide variety of projects with duties ranging from graphic design and project visioning to master site planning and landscape design. Eventually, she left Orlando and set out to accomplish her lifelong goal of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Many miles later she ended her journey here in the lowcountry and joined the Remark team. All of Kaleigh’s adventures have cultivated a passion for sustainable, native landscapes that speak to the history of a place and truly inspire its users. Kelly was raised in Jacksonville, Florida; at a young age she had the opportunity to experience the outdoors through spending time in state and national parks with her family. Her love for the great outdoors grew through many camping and hiking adventures and spending time in the countless natural amenities Florida offers. Wishing to preserve, protect and enhance this natural environment so that others could enjoy it as well, Kelly began her career in landscape architecture by obtaining a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Florida in 2012. Her continued desire to learn and personal interest in horticulture and landscape architecture lead her to pursue career opportunities while in college through volunteering with the Jacksonville Zoo & Garden’s horticulture department, working as a research assistant with UF’s Environmental Horticulture Department, an internship with a landscape architecture firm in Indianapolis, and working as a propagator in a nursery. These experiences enabled her to begin her career in Austin, TX, where she gained experience on various project types including, community, healthcare, mixed use and urban design, and also public realm projects. Upon moving to Charleston with her husband, Michael, (and dog, Hudson), Kelly joined Remark in January 2015. Kelly approaches her personal life with the same creativity she uses in her developing professional career.
